GABAN
Kameron Locke reprised his role as PHOTO in Brook Andrew's post-traumatic theatrical work GABAN at the Art Gallery of New South Wales for the opening of the Sydney Modern Project. This work meditates on the colonial institutions' ongoing role in the treatment of Aboriginal "Australian" and Indigenous communities and communities of color and imagines what reparations could look like.
For his Sydney debut, Kameron reflected on the weight of performing in a colonial space as "objects" that were stolen for colonial conquests. In doing so, he, as PHOTO, interacted with the works displayed in the museum, adding greater depth to the pieces and the performance. In this 90-minute performance, we utilized and transformed multiple performance locations within the AGNSW exhibition halls as the participants and audiences moved throughout the Museum. The ensemble performed a five-run show for this expansive commemoration of the new, world-renowned museum space.
Goethe Institut-Australien and Art Gallery New South Wales supported Kameron Locke's Australian debut.
